A gift card can be processed as a digital payment method. The credit on a gift card can be spent in a webshop that accepts the gift card.
With a gift card, the transaction can be paid both in full and partially by the customer. The remaining amount of the transaction can be fulfilled by any other payment method the webshop is offering to the customer.
The actual payment using a gift card will not be processed by MultiSafepay, but instead by the issuer of the gift card. Therefore, when a gift card payment is successful, MultiSafepay will receive a completed status. MultiSafepay will then process the transaction as paid.
The amount deducted from the gift card to complete a payment will be paid out by the issuer of the gift card.
The transaction flow shows the different ways a transaction can be processed. This differs per payment method.
The order status indicates the status of the order, such as completed, pending or rejected. The order status is independent of the incoming or outgoing payment of the transaction.
The transaction status indicates the payment status of the transaction, such as completed, pending or rejected. Once the transaction status is completed, the amount of the transaction is added to your MultiSafepay balance.

Transactions that are paid in full by means of gift card cannot be refunded via MultiSafepay Control, as there are no available payment details. Therefore, it is advised to process the refund through your own banking environment.
Some rules may apply to certain payment methods. For gift cards, the following rules apply:
Refunding more than the stated amount of the original transaction is NOT possible with gift cards. More information is available on our refund more than original amount page
Payments done by means of gift cards are processed in Euros (EUR)
As a rule of thumb, giftcards cannot be used for (partly) paying for an order placed via a post-payment method. Post-payment methods do not allow the use of a giftcard by a customer when filling in the payment details (after the order has already been placed). This has to do with the accuracy of the order specifications, needed by the collecting party (e.g. Klarna, Afterpay, etc). Our platform would otherwise interpret the giftcard as a discount (which is not present in the shopping cart specification of post-payment methods) and would not reflect the right order information needed, for example, for taxation purposes. However, using giftcards for post-payment can be implemented as an option before placing the order (i.e. on your checkout page, before calling our API). It is the merchant’s sole responsibility to enable this feature. Failing to comply with this product rule might result in unexpected errors and unwanted complications.
MultiSafepay supports a wide range of gift cards. With gift cards, merchants can either accept gift card payments of established gift card issuers or support their own personalized gift card.
MultiSafepay offers 3 gift card connections:
The majority of the gift cards are issued by Intersolve.
Multiple gift cards are supported by MultiSafepay. The customer can pay an order with multiple gift cards of the same or multiple different gift cards.
The gift card issuer will process the connection with one of the issuers shown below. The request for a gift card goes through the issuer of the gift card itself. For example: the VVV Cadeaukaart can be requested at the VVV office. Subsequently, the connection of the VVV Cadeaukaart will be processed by Intersolve in this case.
If a refund of a gift card payment has been requested, you could do so through your own banking environment, as follows:
A transaction fully paid with a gift card can not be reimbursed through MultiSafepay, due to missing bank account details of the customer
A transcation partially paid with a gift card and partially paid with a different method (e.g. iDEAL), can be fully reimbursed to the customer
The amount deducted from a gift card to pay an order is not processed or received by MultiSafepay. MultiSafepay only receives a status notification of a successful payment.
The payout is entirely provided by the issuer of the gift card.
There is no test data available or provided by the issuer of the gift card to test a gift card in a staging or test environment.
When a gift card has been activated on the ecommerce platform, a (small) transaction can be completed to check whether the connection is set correctly to process the gift card as payment method.
Note that this is a real payment and the specified amount will be deducted from the gift card.
Before applying for a gift card, check with your account manager at MultiSafepay if you are eligible for the payment method. Also check whether your ecommerce platform supports the requested.

The start-up costs of a branded gift card are € 200.
MultiSafepay has to construct the personalized gift card and therefore it is our responsibility to assess the feasibility and duration of this process.

When using one of the plugins supported by MultiSafepay, it is recommended to also implement the personalized gift card in the backend of the webshop. As soon as MultiSafepay releases the gift card, you can immediately process payments with this payment method

Due to the distinctiveness of the personalized gift card, it is not possible to add this payment method as a standard method in the plugins. Therefore, the implementation of the personalized gift card within the backend of the webshop is the merchant’s own responsibility. We advise you to contact your developer for assistance
